Happy Deepavali

Being away from India, most of the festivals end up being just another day here, until we do something different. Most of the Indian festivals are pushed to the weekend and celebrated with friends. Most part includes Potluck, going to temple, meeting friends. This Diwali seems to be silent especially after the lovely Diwali we had with my in laws last year. My sincere attempt at making some goodies for this Deepavali. Not bad for a first timer - first timer in trying out Kaaju Katli and baking yes baking thattai. Deep frying in oil doesnt go well , end up getting head ache due to the smoly oil. Exhaust fans or keeping doors open doesnt help much either. But aasai yaara vittadhu, want to eat those delicacies too, so tried doing oil less thattai and heating it in the oven. Found a oil less thattai recipe from here.

Oil less thattai and Kaaju Katli

Deepavali marundhu and shikkakai

Spoke to family members, got blessings, passed on wishes - that was how our Diwali eve was spent.  Ended up working from home, so that we dont have to rush to work today and just take it easy. Took oil bath, wore new dress, ate the savories and kinda, "now what feeling". Will be visiting the temple in the evening,  just to get the feel of Deepavali.  I have never gone to the temple in India during Deepavali,  and see what we end up doing in an alien land.  Also planning to light some candles, or earthen lamps and click some more pictures.  May this day be brighter and bring happiness and let the good always win over evil.

Wow shikai podi and marundhu, that is indeed very traditional, and tatai and Kaju katli sounds wonderful.
I can understand how you feel about missing India during such times. Make the best of it and relax and enjoy.
