The opera show was about Aida, an Ethiopian princess is in love with the Egypt's captain of Guard, Radames & so is he. It is a bitter love triangle story. Egypt's princess Amneris is also in love with Radames. Aida works as the slave girl for the Egyptian princess and is the mistress of Amneris. The story so unfolds with Amneris getting to know about Aida and Radames love for each other and she goes green with jealousy and finally how do the lovers join hands in death. When my husband had booked the tickets to go for this opera show, I wasnt sure if I ever was going to enjoy it. I understand hollywood movies better after coming here. English kke indha nelamai na imagine Italian. Thankfully there were english subtitles for the digital simul cast. After much thought, we decided to go on the pretext we can get up and come out of the show whenever it is starting to become a drag. We managed to leave early from home, just that getting to the ball park was a pain with no cab available and ended up walking almost half the distance. Thankfully spotted an empty cab and we went to the ball park. I have never seen such huge crowd anywhere here in the US, even for Sivaji movie. There were 10s of 1000s of people flooding the ball park. We finally managed to find a decent spot to sit and watch the simulcast. We had even packed our dinner for the night. We were proud we packed our dinner and were pretty sure none of the locals would do it. But no, we were duped. We could see some groups of people managing to pack a 3 course dinner meal right from starter, salad and dessert. I was truly amazed about how these people actually enjoyed the evening.
Opera started at dot 8pm and was to go on till 11pm. Thankfully the city wasnt cold or windy that day and we could still manage with a light jacket. We did have a pleasant evening, what with an opera show in front of you, overlooking the bay. Priceless. I could finally believe we can sit through an opera show (provided I read the synopsis before going to the show, which I actually did). Wish we had gone in a bigger group with more food, would have been even more fun. May be next time.

We didnt sit through the entire show as it was getting late and we had to take a train back home. We sat through 3 of the 4 acts, left before the last act started. Since we had read the story there wasnt any suspense. I somehow felt that opera could very much relate to our own villu paattu or dance drama back in India, just that we never go for such programmes, which is very much in our own mother tongue. What an irony !!

Nice description of going to the opera. Enjoyed reading it. Love triangle story is too familiar for us. Many Tamil movies are like that. As they say in Tamilnadu, vannathikku vannan mela aasai, aanaal vannanukku kazhudhai mela aasai.
Just one question. If the simulcast was free of charge, why your husband had to book the tickets?
Wow!,that is great, such things have to be seen to get the real feel of it. As you said a bigger group would have been more enjoyable.Did you have the moon at least shining on that night?

@sg my husband booked it online, so that we could enter the stadium earlier. People who had online reservation got to enter the stadium 30 mins before they opened the gates to the public. Unfortunately by the time we reached it was already open for the general public
